Newchurch Grey
Newchurch Grey is a dense Spanish sandstone with a cool grey tone and fine grain, offering a strong alternative to Scout Moor and Whitworth. With excellent flexural (26.8 MPa) and compressive (142.9 MPa) strength, low porosity (1.6%), and high frost resistance, it’s ideal for demanding UK schemes. Supplied in sawn, flamed, and hammered finishes for versatile architectural use.

Newchurch Grey is a premium European sandstone, quarried in northern Spain and selected for its dense structure, high strength, and cool blue-grey tone with occasional warm flecks. With a fine to semi-fine grain and excellent weathering properties, it provides a clean, architectural finish suitable for a wide range of hard landscape and building applications.
This material is a strong alternative to now-unavailable British gritstones such as Scout Moor and Whitworth, with comparable strength and improved consistency. It delivers a compressive strength of 142.9 MPa and flexural strength of 26.8 MPa, maintaining high integrity even after frost cycles. The low absorption rate (0.43%) and minimal porosity (1.6%) make it especially suited to UK climates.
Newchurch Grey is available in a variety of finishes — including sawn, fine hammered, flamed, and aged — offering flexibility across both contemporary and traditional settings. Its slip resistance and abrasion performance meet the demands of pedestrian and trafficked areas, with a tested wet SRV of 69 and abrasion resistance of 20 mm.
